This week in one of our English classes we learned the parts of the body. In doing so we thought it might be helpful to sing that great old song of "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes". Oh yeah, a good time was had by all. We ended up doing the song three times with all three verses! "Head and shoulders, knees and toes. Eyes and ears, mouth and nose. Ankles, elbows, feet, and seat." When all was said and done, we had quite the aerobics workout. Some students insisted on saying ka-nee for knee, but we eventually convinced them otherwise.
Along with that lesson we also learned how to share our feelings and give advice.
- "Oh, I have a backache!"
- "You should go and see a doctor."
- "I have a headache."
- "Take some aspirin."
With that lesson we heard a lot of "eed-ash" for headache, but I think they all had it under control before the end of class.
While learning how to share our feelings we learned the word homesick. We wanted to make sure that they knew it did not involve vomiting while at home. We explained how sometimes when you move away from where you grew up you may miss that place where you used to be. That is homesick. Tasha, a friend that helps us teach class, asked me, "Thomas, are you homesick for the United States?" I replied, "Sometimes I am homesick for the United States." All of the class clapped, cheered, and congratulated me on how well I spoke English. ;-) She asked others as well. One man replied, "Yes, I miss my home country of Syria everyday." He has not been to his childhood home for more than 30 years. One lady replied, "No, I don't miss Tunisia at all, but I am homesick for my English class." That lady will be leaving our class next week. She is moving to a new job in a city a couple of hours away. We are having a little class party in her honor next week to say goodbye.
